The careful art of preserving Americas early history in the form of metalwork is a passion of the reknown Winterthur Museum in Deleware. Their impressive collection of American-made and imported metalwork is comprised of more than 21,000 objects! One very important group within this collection is that of wrought iron hardware as well as ornamental and useful iron implements, such as the fireback. Firebacks are shipped with a water base black paint to prevent rust build up during transit. To give a brighter finish to the fireback and to protect the casting from rust after use with a fire, an application of water base graphite stove polish is recommended. Applied with a toothbrush or rag, this paste, when dry, can be polished with a wire brush or rag giving the fireback an attractive silverfish sheen. Established by Thomas Maybury in 1745 for the purpose of manufacturing iron, Hereford Furnace was instrumental in producing the first cast-iron cooking stove in North America. Enter the Pennsylvania Firebacks Hereford Stove Plate Cast Iron Fireback. Pennsylvania Firebacks master artisans created this reproduction stove plate on which is displayed the Hereford name and date that Thomas Mayburys son took over the business, 1757. This fireback contains finely-detailed elements of the original stove plates textures and sculptural design. This fireback would be an ideal addition to any hearth in the New England region where so much of Americas colonial history can still be seen today.
