In times past, no well-appointed fireplace was ever considered complete without a cast iron fireback. And although todays fireplaces have seen great improvements in construction materials, a fireback is still the best way to protect a hearths back wall from damage. In addition to being a beautiful centerpiece of the fireplace, it is also highly functional in reflecting light and heat from the fire out into the room.The Pennsylvania Firebacks Georgian Shell Cast Iron Fireback is simply adorned with a scallop shell which was especially popular with furniture makers and designers during the Georgian Period in Rhode Island. Although very simple, this firebacks clean lines and traditional arched shape lend itself to a variety of decorating styles. Firebacks are shipped with a water base black paint to prevent rust build up during transit. To give a brighter finish to the fireback and to protect the casting from rust after use with a fire, an application of water base graphite stove polish is recommended.
