Steeped in historical tradition and design, the fireback remains a practical addition to any fireplace. More than just a decorative piece, a fireback has full utilitarian functions that allow a greater portion of a fires heat to be radiated out into the room while it protects the back wall of the hearth. Firebacks are shipped with a water base black paint to prevent rust build up during transit. To give a brighter finish to the fireback and to protect the casting from rust after use with a fire, an application of water base graphite stove polish is recommended. Applied with a toothbrush or rag, this paste, when dry, can be polished with a wire brush or rag giving the fireback an attractive silverfish sheen.The carbon-rich iron turned out by American foundaries was ideally suited for objects intended to withstand high heat.
