Adding to the rich collection of historical reproductions is the Pennsylvania Firebacks Eagle & Shield Cast Iron Fireback. Believed to have been cast in England for the American market some time between 1780 and 1810, this reproduction casting is five inches shorter than the original in order to accommodate contemporary hearth proportions. Firebacks are shipped with a water base black paint to prevent rust build up during transit. To give a brighter finish to the fireback and to protect the casting from rust after use with a fire, an application of water base graphite stove polish is recommended. Applied with a toothbrush or rag, this paste, when dry, can be polished with a wire brush or rag giving the fireback an attractive silverfish sheen.Designed by artist J. Del Conner in 1993, this fireback portrays Americas national bird, the bald eagle. Rich in symbolism, the shield that the eagle bears displays thirteen stars to represent the original thirteen colonies. One talon clutches arrows while the other holds the olive branch to imply that although America values peace, it will defend itself using force, if necessary.|Cast Iron Construction |17 inch W x 24.75 inch H |Handmade in the USA
